Allah and Death

Death is not a trivial matter. Death is the greatest threat to human existence. No other thing haunts us more than death. We would give anything to have that extra breath of life. Yet many Scholars state that death is a natural process in humanity. Then why do we fear death so much? Many of the same teachers claim that Adam only stumbled in the Garden (Garden of Eden), in other words, Adam did not really “Fall” to cause death. We have to ask a question at this point, was death part of the Garden (Garden of Eden)?. Quran states that God removed them from the garden after they disobeyed Him by eating the fruit from the tree.

…and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, “Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time.” (Quran 2:36)

“Get you down (upon the earth), all of you together, from Paradise, some of you are an enemy to some others.  Then, if there comes to you guidance from Me, whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery.” (Quran 20:123)

From Quran 7:24-25 we can deduce that there was no death there, because death and resurrection were proclaimed in this verse after the act of disobedience.

“‘On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment, for a time.’  He said: ‘Therein you shall live and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out (resurrected).’” (Quran 7:24–25)

The paradise was a wonderful place without death, illness or disease. This was the Garden. What kind of a stumble caused God to remove Adam from the Garden, from this paradise? This is an interesting question that we want to explore today.

Many teachers of the book claim that humankind is not born with a tendency towards sin. But the reality is that everyone does “sin.” Does that mean we have a tendency towards sin or not? The verse that most teachers use is Quran 17:15 states that there is no hereditary sin in Islam and son will not pay for his father’s mistakes.

…no bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another… (Quran 17:15)

“And no bearer of burdens shall bear another’s burden.” (Quran 35:18)

I have to ask a question, Then why are we paying for Adam’s sins? Death, sickness disease is upon us. It even states in the Quran that God forgave them.

“Then they both ate of that tree, and so their private parts appeared to them, and they began to stick on themselves the leaves from Paradise for their covering.  Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray.  Then his Lord chose him, and turned to him with forgiveness and gave him guidance.” (Quran 20:121-122)

Are you seeing what I am seeing?  Something does not add up here. I am not stupid, and you are not stupid. Some things do not require a religious degree to figure out. We are paying for Adam’s sins! And that’s a fact. We need to get to the bottom of this, my friend. Now the reality is the reality, and we are in it. Just like in Jewish history, Jesus called out the Pharisees, I call out any teacher or the Book or Imam’s disillusion on this subject. Enough with the lies. I boiled it down to a single question, How can death be a response to a single act of disobedience? If their lies are true, then this is harsh punishment and is unjust. Imagine a judge sentencing someone to life in prison for disobedience. No judge in their right mind will do such a thing. Imagine you send your own son to a life of torturous slavery the first time he disobeys you. Even worse, after your son gets married, you throw his kids to a life of slavery as well, for that first act of disobedience. I, my friends, am angry with the lies and you should be too. I want to know the truth. Any teachers or imam out there please enlighten us if you can. Because what is proposed today is morally inadequate.

Death is not something to glance over and say, well it must make sense because my Imam said it makes sense when it apparently does NOT. Your life is at stake here my friend. You will not hide behind your imam or your father or whomever you consider as a spiritual leader in your life. You are responsible for your decisions. That includes in making a decision on what makes sense and what does not. Time for you take control of your thoughts and your life and hear some truth for once.

If you’re confused about death, let me give you my understanding of death and see if I can shed some light on this subject for you. Let me appeal to your common sense. After that, tell me if you agree with me. Let me know your thoughts on this crucial subject.

Actions of a person or a God speak louder than words themselves. We can say actions give meaning to the words. Words can be sarcastic or figurative, and actions help bring out the truth of what a person wants to express to you. At times people read into words and ignore the reality of actions. And that would be foolish if we acted that way in our personal lives. In our life, we are well aware of this. Then why would we exclude Quran from this? We would never trust a word of a liar because we know his words are empty. Now, our spoken language is rich, and we can express things in words that written literal meanings cannot express. We change the meaning of words by when, where and how we use them. We call someone “cool,” or we say that’s “hot,” or that’s “dope” or “sick” and so forth. Many times our expressions are completely different from the literal meaning of words. Going back to Adam, death was a reaction to an action of the same gravity. I think we would all agree on this. The law of justice is simple, eye for an eye. We can not make God evil and have God repay humanity’s disobedience with heavier punishment then we deserve. If God is just, then the punishment of death is well deserved by us. It is our foolishness that excluded God’s actions from his words of forgiveness that made the gravity of Adam’s sin meaningless. A century of trying to interpret the word of God while completely missing God’s actions makes any Imam or teacher a fool that is trying to strip death of its sting. A better way to see this is that God has grace and let us live because we deserve death. But not only was His grace so good to let us live but He even wanted to redeem us back to paradise. Now, that’s a God I want to worship! That’s what I want to hear spiritual leaders speak about. I want to hear these type of phrases about death: “We are dying friends!”, “The sting of sin is death?” and “Without God’s grace we are worthy of death.” Are you connecting the dots, my friend? Our corrupt nature reflects our reality. We are sick and diseased and are dying. Death is scary, and it’s not something we should brush off under “it’s just a natural process.” Not when my spirit cries out “I want to live.” Death was God’s response to Adam’s Sin, an act of disobedience. We MUST understand His words correctly in light of his actions.

I got your this far, my friend. Now the tough question begins. What about the act of disobedience? How can it be worthy of death? This original sin has brought us here today! Do you see the value in knowing the truth about this single act of disobedience? Its value is as significant as life itself. If it were not for the answer I found, that I am going to share with you, I would be swinging my arms at God and saying “Why? Why? Why? Take my life I do not want to live knowing that you are unjust and unfair”. A God that takes pleasure in seeing people suffer under the sting of death.

But that’s not the God you or I serve. Our God is merciful and is full of grace. And our God is Holy and Just. He can not compromise with evil and let it go unpunished. Let’s review: Adam lived in the garden, paradise without death. Adam was tempted by the Devil and disobeys God. God responds by taking him out of paradise to what we know as reality today, where we face death. Let’s break this down. We already agreed on the fact that we can’t have Adam’s sin being imputed to us. What we see here is that Adam is a human and what we can say is that no matter who would be in his place, we would all fall for the same temptation. Is there proof for this? Absolutely, it is because we all sin eventually. There is not a single person who did not sin. Therefore, the issue of disobedience is much deeper than we might think. If original sin did not have an effect on humanity, then some of us should be able to live a sinless life. But the truth is that none of us are able to. So the depth of sin is much greater than most admit to. We can only say that Adam was the only one who experienced a sinless life when he lived in the garden. All his descendants are sinful, we all have a sinful nature. We are not able to “not sin.” That is deep, there is something fundamentally wrong with our nature today. The original sin of disobedience was a breaking point from a state of integrity to a state of condemnation or a state of being under the sting of death. We know that death has no power over purity because death was caused by sin. Therefore death rules our human nature. What can we say about Adam then? Adam was the archetype of Humanity as Quran 20:123 refers to “… all of you together…”

“Get you down (upon the earth), all of you together, from Paradise, some of you are an enemy to some others.  Then, if there comes to you guidance from Me, whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery.” (Quran 20:123)

We all sinned in Adam. Even if Adam was a single man but we all are a blueprint of him. All people are guilty of sin due to who we are rather than what happened with just Adam. What this means is that if you were there instead of Adam, you would have fallen as well. I know this is a little difficult to take in. Just take a second to think about it. Does that mean we were always sinful? I don’t think so. Think about computer software. Initially, it’s able to perform everything according to the creator’s will. Its integrity is intact. But when you introduce a virus to it, it loses its integrity. The creator can not trust the software to do what he designed it to do. Does this mean the software was not good enough? Not really, its just did not have certain defenses yet. You could even say God wanted us to grow through this development to create an antivirus defense to sin. But that’s a different subject. We digress. Let us go back to the breaking point. Before sin we were innocent, and no judgment was over us, but when the first act of sin happened, something went wrong, something was corrupted. We all were condemned by sin. From that point on in history humanity became sinful in nature. This is the only way we can justify the sting of death over us. Sin affected all our character. Every aspect of human personality and character is affected by sinful nature. Like a drop of ink in a glass of water. We are corrupted.

This means that the original sin is the best explanation for the reality of death. Also, this means that we did inherit a fallen nature that is corrupt. Devil is working in this world to convince us otherwise, just like he did in the garden. You will not die, or death is just a natural process, don’t worry about it. I fear, my friends, and I think you do as well. We all face a death sentence today. No matter how good we are or try to be, we can not live out a life of purity. We all fall because our nature is fallen. This is the reality, we are wretched people in need of God’s grace. We are born with a tendency towards sin, unlike what many teachers of the book may tell you. If it were not for His grace, we would already be annihilated. It is because of His grace we still live today. But there is something positive about death – “Death is only a sting.” That means there is time for repentance and for God to redeem us. Because we are still alive today my friends, is a sign that God’s grace is over us and there’s time for you and me to repent. If you find yourself in this state of mind, convicted by my appeal to your common sense about death then recognize how wretched your nature is and reach out to God in repentance and ask Him to forgive you and save you.
